Kate Upton joins B.J. and Justin Upton on cover of SI’s baseball playoff preview

News, Photos, Sports

October baseball is here and even Kate Upton has playoff fever. The two-time SI Swimsuit cover model joined B.J. and Justin Upton on the cover of SI’s postseason preview. The photo shoot took place last month at Citi Field when the Braves were in town to play the Mets. It marks the first time a swimsuit model has appeared on SI’s weekly cover. The three Uptons got along famously, joking throughout the shoot that they were being long-lost cousins. Whether the Braves win the World Series remains to be seen but one thing is certain: No team has a better-looking fanbase, thanks to Cousin Kate!

Kate should be on every SI cover... Yum.

I just don't think she is all that. Her face is really not that pretty to be a model but whatever. To each their own.

beautiful face but chunky.  Didn't realize Uptons were strong enough to hold her up!!!

next week, SI's MLB player of the year on the cover....J.P. Arencibia!

I'd love to have sat in on that cover meeting. Geez, you know, we could put Kershaw on the cover, or McCutcheon, or Wainwright, or Verlander, or Cabrera, or.....hey, I got an idea! Why don't we put a couple of overpaid, mediocre players on the cover, who between them have 36 homers and a .200 batting average, and we can add a young blonde chick with big headlamps! Whattya say guys?

Kate's a better hitter than BJ (not that that's saying much)

I think the photo's faked.  She's not wearing regulation socks or stirrups.

B.J. Upton just had one of the worst seasons in MLB history and you put him on your cover? Shame on you, SI.

Miss Upton getting split into half by the upton brothers would be a better story SI

This just-in: Kate Upton does BJ photoshoot.

Why not get rid of the athletes and put super models in sports uniforms on all your covers? I remember years ago a women in a catchers gear on some cover. It's much better than looking at the Uptons or A rod or any other athlete.

one of these things is not like the others

She looks quite Harlem in the freeze frame photo I was "forced" to see.

Sadly, I had a premonition that they would ask her to stand next to these two drains on the Atlanta Braves pay roll.

Nothing against Miss Upton but I don't need to buy a magazine to see highly paid "supermodels" in bikinis. Plenty of women in bikinis right here in my hometown. I understand that many 12-25 year old males who go around on the Internet claiming they have had sexual affairs with other people's mothers are fans of her. That's the way it is.

Loved the way David Wright tried to photo bomb the Uptons. Hey, Dave, why don't come to the Dodgers? You will make the playoffs for the next 5 years and won't have to horn your way into picture with pretty girls.

Kate Upton and BJ on the cover of SI... and BJ's got wood.  Nice

I can't quite put my finger on it, but something tells me one of the Uptons may have had a different father.

SI should have titled this "Baseball's Biggest Busts."

Anyway, the last thing BJ needed to be doing was wasting time taking pictures with a super model. Those are valuable hours he should have spent in the batting cage, or maybe with a sports psychologist or something. Now he's maybe not even going to make the playoff roster and he's on the cover of the SI baseball playoff issue anyway. Good job, all around.

Listen, I'm a Braves fan and, sure, I think Kate Upton is a lovely young woman, but come on. Let's face it, Justin Upton had an ok-but-not-great season and his brother was just God-awful. They have been used solely as an excuse to have Kate Upton on the cover of another issue of the magazine. I guess it'd be one thing if these guys had carried the team all season or something, but that has definitely NOT been the case and it's kind of an embarrassment for everyone involved (Well, except for Kate. I mean, her job is to be on the cover of magazines, so whatever.)

Next time, use the cover of your magazine to actually feature players who are more deserving, but then, I guess that wouldn't have given you the opportunity to put Kate on the cover then, would it?

any headline that contains BJ and Kate Upton in it gets my attention.

I like looking at beautiful women (especially in tiny swim suits) as much as the next guy, but SI has really overdone it. Just put old Kate stark naked on the cover, we'll all get our jollies and SI can be a sports magazine

Kate just stands around and gets millions. She does a better job of earning her $$ than a certain Upton brother...

I will go out on a limb and say that the Upton brothers didn't object to the more famous Kate Upton joining them...

Michael10

@jason g1 That's the point. She doesn't look like every other cold, gaunt, chiseled supermodel; she looks like someone who might actually exist outside the lens. Upton is what the modeling industry would look like if it were run by heterosexual males...

mnico213

@WHO*IS*ESPN Her being chunky is laughable, yes obviously there are skinnier girls, but to act like she is overweight suggests never having been in contact with a girl in real life (which makes sense with someone with such a dumb screen name).

@Vinny Cordoba I think it's pretty clear from the magazine and this website that they believe Kate sells more magazines than the vast majority of athletes.  I don't know if that's a knock on SI or their target audience.

Vinny Cordoba
Vinny Cordoba

@Michael10 @jason g1 , Kate Upton is a fabulously beautiful woman, with classic curves and a perfectly symmetrical face. She's not exactly the girl next door, unless you happen to live in Malibu or South Beach. If we really want to change the image of the supermodel, put somebody's Aunt Ruth on there.

And I still think it sucks that they put Kate on the cover of the playoffs issue with a couple of half-a** players.

Vinny Cordoba
Vinny Cordoba

@mnico213 @Vinny Cordoba , that's probably true. But this is supposed to be a sports magazine, and Kate has nothing to do with sports. If they really want to sell a lot of magazines they can just put Beyonce or Taylor Swift or Jennifer Anniston or one of the Kardashians on the cover every week. What happens is, you spend so much time and energy trying to appeal to a mass audience that you lose your core audience in the process and you're stuck with nothing. I don't even bother reading SI anymore, and I used to be huge fan because it used to be a great sports magazine. Not so much anymore.

Vinny Cordoba

@JoeCabot @Vinny Cordoba , oh, well you must be right. I must be imagining the fact that SI's sales and circulation have fallen rapidly in recent years, that unique visitors to its website have been on a steady decline this year, that it has had to lay off staff, that subscriptions continue to dwindle. Oh wait a minute -- turns out I'm not imagining that after all. It's all real and true. Feel free to look it up.

JoeCabot

@Vinny Cordoba They don't spend as much time and energy trying to sell magazines as you have complaining about this cover.    They are in the business of selling magazine to a mass audience.  They also pay people plenty of money to determine how to do so.   Don't know what this core audience is that you speak of, but if it is people who are not going buy a magazine because they wanted someone else on the cover, well I don't believe that is the market that they are looking for.
