IF THE COVER of SI Swimsuit is some of the hottest real estate a supermodel can inhabit, the 50th Anniversary Issue cover is the Tribeca triplex of American newsstands. And if the featured models Nina Agdal, Lily Aldridge and Chrissy Teigen can be believed, they are delighted to occupy that space together.

“We really, honestly like each other,” said Chrissy earlier this afternoon. “Of course you are going to hear that from anybody who does a group shot, but this time it’s true. The connection was natural and the mood was fun.”

An hour after getting the good news (a moment captured in the above video), Chrissy and Lily (Nina was out-of-town on a shoot) were on the 33rd floor of the Time-Life Building in a conference room whose enormous windows look out onto the Hudson—by all accounts, on top of the world. There they prepped for the two-week press tour that would likely be the most laborious of their already high-profile lives. But neither model was thinking of small annoyances, especially not Chrissy. Now 28, she has been fan favorite ever since her 2010 Rookie of the Year debut. But nothing guarantees a cover—sorry guys, the Twitter pleas don’t often factor into editorial decisions—and it was safest to avoid thinking about it altogether which she managed to do, until one day in the Cook Islands, late last October.

“It’s been many years that I’ve been doing this now and this was the first shoot where I was like, ‘This may actually have cover potential. We had this perfect water, perfect time of day, perfect light, perfect look, perfect suits, perfect everything. And with James Macari shooting, I just sensed it was going to turn out right.’”

Lily is technically a rookie but also one of the most recognizable models in the industry thanks her gig as a Victoria’s Secret Angel, a credential which makes her status as the first rookie on the cover since 1998 (Heidi Klum) less surprising.

“We had been on the island for a few days by that point and had had so much fun together. That day we went to a smaller island where the light was beautiful, and we each took turns posing in the middle,” said Lily.

It all sounded so joyous and idyllic. I was hungry for a little staged snark.

OK, so, which of you would you say really got the cover?

[Laughter]

Lily: “All of us!”

Chrissy: “If I were to pick . . . I would have to say our butts won it.”

So in other words the way to try and show that you have a shapely rear end is to have on a swimsuit that is two sizes too small and you pose in the pictures with your butt poked out to give the appearance that your butt is larger than it really is.  In the future why not just use women who actually have a nice curvy butt as opposed to those who have to fake it.

3 pretty, in shape women with nice rear ends.  No complaints here

Just how these girls can stand with their backs curved so much so, (like bent pipe cleaners) that their butts are jutting out twice as much as they normally would, is beyond me.  And I was a gymnast for 14 years!

Looks a little too much like a Playboy spread rather than SI...

Amazing how many crude people write comments for all to read Shame on you pigs,  there is three beautiful young ladies living a dream and some of you just have to make it dirty. I'd be proud to call and or all three of these young women my daughters. Get your mind out of the gutters.  Sorry Girls your all so beautiful good luck in your careers.

It's a great pic, but I think SI blew it by not having Anne Vyalitsyna as their cover model!  Just my opinion!

I had no idea SI has been in the "soft porn" business for 50 years.......

Funny how CNN (Certainly Not News) went after them for their continued abuse (glorification...etc) of women.

Americans are so squeamish about the human body. The swimsuit issue issue has always been about skin, Why does SI create this issue? Because sex sells even in this often bizarre puritanical society and this is always the best selling issue of the year.

It was once scandalous in this society for a woman to show her ankle. Thankfully we have moved forward from those days. And it's ironic than woman have gained so many rights as society has evolved. It's their choice in this case if they want to use their bodies for financial gain.  These girls (all of them) look great. If you don't think that's the case just make your complaint and move along, it's a free country after all. The rest of us will just enjoy the pictures.

The best you can say about these asses is they're barely not flat! That ain't good enough. If you're only going to showcase the asses at least get some chicks with juicy bubble butts.

I like to look at a nice behind with the best of them, but don't women understand that men think that they are only good for one thing when they walk around like this. It's not limited to models. Women tend to be exhibitionists, and it really doesn't do much for the esteem of men. That said, I am a married man with 3 children.

Not sure I have enough man juice for all 3 asses but I will try

I guess some people get totally excited about having their mostly exposed butt on the cover of one of the most popular sports magazines in the world which will be seen by millions of people.  I'm not sure if I'd want my butt to be the thing that gave me my 15 minutes of fame in my lifetime.   I strongly believe in freedom of speech and expression and have no qualms about the wardrobe or lack of it strung hither and tither, here and there on these 3 young girls.  On the other hand, I think that Sports Illustrated has really lost their bearings on this cover spread.  I'm sure they will sell a large number of issues, but at the same time they have cut off one of their limbs in doing so.

It's funny to read how all the women are offended on here. Personally, I'm glad they moved away from the massive tits approach, like Kate Upton' past covers. Not that that isn't nice to look at, but it's refreshing to see a trio of hot asses this time. The bare backs are great as well as the way they are touching each other's butts. When's this go on sale?

Are we sure this is a "swim suit" issue??   Looks like the cover should be on Playboy instead...I don't see any swim suits.

just a thought....ever notice how the ex-smokers are the worst? Priests the loudest against child pornography? Child molesters never talk about porn? Yeah, just read some of the comments....jealous be jealous.

let me see if i have this in perspective.  a generally percieved men's magazine with a):  a three hundred pound linebacker, or b):  three very pretty girls.  hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.  which one would i, a healthy male, buy.  hmmmmm.  eleven months out of the year, you get the fat guy on the cover.  one time out of the year you get killer cute girls.  hmmmmmmm.......wonder which one i want to buy.  (oh and for some of you psychos.....do you really want a magazine with fat girls in bathing suits?  c'mon.)

some of the people making pretty rude comments remind me of the people who don't like beauty contests.  OHHHH, I remember, those that would never be considered.  on the other hand, i don't watch beauty contests because i think they are kind of ridiculous, but....the people that qualify seem to be having a good time and not doing anyone any harm, so.....what on earth is wrong with that.  it's seems to me, from what i have seen, it's the fat crowd doing the protesting.  sorry, if you don't like that, but it's what i have seen.

but, in the long run, i don't buy sports illustrated (even though i like sports, generally) because it's really a pretty terrible magazine.  but, that's just me.

oh just to rub it in.......am i the only person that "women's" magazines have sexy girls on the covers, and when they try to put a "handsome" man on the cover, the sales go wayyyy down?  Just sayin'.

All I can say is EW...YUCK .... terrible choice, poor cover etiquette. That's more like butt floss, not a swimsuit.

Is that a swimsuit edition or an ad for butt implants?

One of the worst, most unimaginative covers ever.  I've always looked forward to this issue.  What  a disappointment.  Maybe the shots inside are better. Hope so.

All three are too boney and shapeless looking. But at least they don't look dead like fashion models. Horrible chicken legs on the right one though!

There are probably some swimsuits featured in the magazine...somewhere. It's racy as far as 1950's standards, but, not 2014. No real private parts showing. Just some touched up bodies. They are not kissing each other or putting their hands in inappropriate places. We are OK...until next year's issue which is going to have to top or topless this one.

@ecc4929"even in this often bizarre puritanical society"  You obviously don't know what the word puritanical means.  A "puritanical" society wouldn't allow the swimsuit edition to even be printed and would arrest the photographers, the models and publishers.  Instead of that treatment, this cover and the magazine are displayed on newsstands everywhere.

AmySkene
AmySkene

@ecc4929  Except that it's not a choice.  It's not a choice to see this here, unless one just cuts off from sport.  It's not a choice to see it at the checkout.  That's the point here - it's something being forced on those of us who don't want to look at it.  It humanity at the lowest level.  It isn't progress.

@ecc4929  It's almost become a cool past time to take shots at Americans... Perhaps you should go visit any of the "stans" and tell me if you have anything to complain about.

@jeanbaker0  Implants?  If these three had implants, they need to request their money back because the job was not completed.  Especially the one in pink

@woodson26 @sindfetishNo, curvy is the preference for most straight men. Otherwise the boney look would have been common way before just 5 years ago.
